Applications Open for Board and Commission Roles

Steamboat Springs, Colorado-May 26, 2026-If you have been looking for a way to give back, help shape local decisions, and play a role in the future of Steamboat Springs, this is your opportunity to step into community service. These regular and alternate positions offer an ideal way to get involved, learn the process, and make an impact while easing into board and commission service.

The city is seeking applicants for open positions on three city boards and commissions. These volunteer roles provide residents with a meaningful way to get involved in local government while offering a supportive introduction to board and commission service.

Boards and commissions play an important role in helping shape decisions related to land use, historic preservation, and the future of the community. Alternate members participate in meetings, discussions, and decision making when called upon, making these positions an excellent way for first-time applicants to gain experience and contribute to the community.

The city is currently accepting applications for the following openings:

Board of Adjustment

  • Open Seat: One alternate seat, term through March 2028 
  • Role: Reviews requests for adjustments to development standards related to single-family homes, duplexes, signage, and floodplains to ensure applications are evaluated fairly and consistently with city regulations. 
  • Why it matters: Supports fair and balanced land use oversight. 

Historic Preservation Commission

  • Open Seat: One regular seat, term through March 2029 
  • Role: Reviews design applications, evaluates nominations to the Steamboat Springs Register of Historic Places, provides recommendations to City Council, endorses National Register submissions, and reviews qualified restoration projects for state tax credits. 
  • Why it matters: Helps preserve the community’s historic character and cultural heritage. 

Planning Commission

  • Open Seat: One alternate seat, term through March 2028 
  • Role: Advises on long-range planning, land use regulations, and community development matters that help guide future growth and development. 
  • Why it matters: Provides leadership on community planning and future visioning. 

Applications for all open seats are due by June 15, 2026 and can be completed online through the city’s website. As a thank you for their service, all appointed board and commission members receive a Howelsen Hill Family Ski Pass. Planning Commission members also receive a Haymaker Golf Pass.
