K9 Challenge Showcases Elite Dogs and Handlers

City of Steamboat Springs NEWS Posted on April 27, 2026

Steamboat Springs, Colorado-April 27, 2026-The community is invited to experience the excitement and precision of the K9 Challenge, taking place on Saturday, May 30. The High Desert Police K9 Association event features highly trained working dogs and their handlers competing in a series of skill-based demonstrations and friendly competitions.

“This event is a great opportunity for the community to see firsthand the incredible abilities and training of working K9 teams,” said Steamboat Springs Police K9 Officer Brenden Andrews. “These dogs are not only highly skilled, but they are also critical partners in keeping our communities safe.”

Spectators will see K9 teams demonstrate obedience, agility, and detection work, along with crowd-favorite events such as fastest dog, hardest hitting, best grip, and muzzle work. The event highlights the discipline, training, and strong partnership between handlers and their K9 partners.

K9 teams play a vital role in public safety and community service. These specialized units support local agencies through criminal apprehension, detection of narcotics and explosives, search and rescue operations, and locating missing persons. Their work enhances safety, strengthens emergency response capabilities, and provides an essential resource for law enforcement and community protection.

In addition to the competitions, attendees can enjoy raffle prizes, silent auction items, and event merchandise available throughout the day. Proceeds support continued training, equipment, and program needs for participating K9 teams.

For the safety of all working dogs and handlers, personal pets are not permitted at the event; only K9s participating in the challenge will be allowed on site.

The K9 Challenge will be held at Howelsen Rodeo Grounds from 10 am to 3 pm and is open to the public with free admission. All ages are welcome to attend and cheer on their favorite K9 teams including local teams from the Steamboat Springs Police Department, Routt County Sheriff’s Office and Craig Police Department.
