[ARCHIVED] Steamboat Springs Police Unveil New Patrol Vehicles

What’s Black, White and surely to be seen all over town this winter? The new Steamboat Springs Police black and white patrol vehicles hitting the road this week.

“Nothing is more iconic for a police car than the traditional black and white,” said Steamboat Springs Police Chief Cory Christensen. “More importantly, I want us to be highly visible and for our citizens to see us out there and know we’re around to help.”

Long a tradition with police departments across North America, the ‘Black & White’ format is largely favored because it can be seen from a significant distance as well as is highly visible in snow, which is especially of value in Steamboat Springs’ snowy winter conditions.

This year, the new color scheme will be applied to two new police cars which are expected to start patrolling the city this week. In addition, the spur and the traditional blue hue from the city logo were incorporated into the overall design.

The department will transition to the new black & white pattern as older vehicles are retired over the coming years. The change is expected to take several years before the entire force is in the black and white format.

The new vehicles are ordered from the factory painted in black with the doors applied with a vinyl white overlay. The city’s Fleet Department applies the decals as well as equips the vehicles with all electronic equipment, public safety enhancements and after factory features.

The department is planning several opportunities for the public to see the new patrol vehicles up close over the inaugural year as way to become more accustom to the new appearance.
