With river flows decreasing and tubing season on the horizon, the City of Steamboat Springs and other river advocates are requesting that all user groups RESPECT THE YAMPA. The campaign is a continued effort to educate the public on how to responsibly recreate on the river and minimize impacts to the health of the river and other recreationalists.
RESPECTING THE YAMPA requires following some basic rules and river etiquette while enjoying appropriate uses on the Yampa River. Sharing this information with others and peer education can help get the word out. The basic principles are:
- Do not bring loose items on the river – it becomes TRASH downstream
- Secure everything to your tube – Rig to Flip
- Do not bring: flip flops, alcohol and glass, Styrofoam or coolers
- Life Jackets are encouraged for all river floaters
- Use one of the approved Commercial Tube Suppliers for the best experience
- RESPECT other users and private property
- PUT in at Fetcher Park or lower to comply with management plans
Volunteer groups will organize river cleanups during the summer months to clean up trash and litter from those not following river etiquette. For those interested in volunteering in cleanup days, please contact the City’s Parks and Community Services Department (879-4300). Please protect your river and give everyone a chance to enjoy it.
