Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue was dispatched to mile marker 145 on Highway 40 for a 2-car head on crash. Routt County Communications Center (RCCC) updated the initial responding crew of Engine 6-1, Ambulance 6-2, and Ambulance 6-4 that there were 4 injured parties with one seriously hurt and trapped in the vehicle. Acting Captain Joe Oakland asked for RCCC to page for off-duty personnel to staff and bring an additional ambulance to the scene due to the number of patients involved. Off duty personnel staffed Ambulance 6-3 and brought it to the scene of the accident. 12 Steamboat Springs Fire personnel took care of the extrication and medical care of the seriously injured patient from one vehicle and the three other injured parties. All three ambulances and staff from the Engine 6-1 were used in the care and transport of the four injured parties to Yampa Valley Medical Center. Due to the extensive damage to the vehicle where the seriously injured party was extrication took approximately 30 minutes. Helicopter transport for the seriously injured patient was not available due to the weather.

During this event an additional request for an ambulance was made for a patient in the Greater Steamboat Springs Fire District who was semi-conscious with breathing problems. Acting Captain Joe Oakland asked RCCC to send out an additional request for off-duty personnel to come in to the station to staff an ambulance. Fire Marshall Shaffer responded with Staff Vehicle 6-3. No other off-duty personnel were available to assist and a mutual aid request was made to Oak Creek Fire Protection District (OCFPD) for an ambulance. OCFPD was dispatched at 11:00 and their ambulance returned to their district at 12:58 after bringing the patient to the hospital.
