Members of the Steamboat Springs Teen Council have selected Charlie Harrington as Teen of the Month for October, 2017! Charlie has been chosen for this honor by members of the Steamboat Springs Teen Council because he is an outstanding teen in our community and embodies the following values of Teen Council:
- Demonstrates that teens are valuable community assets
- Acts as a leader and/or a positive role model amongst his peers
- Committed to community service
Charlie Harrington is a senior at Steamboat Springs High School, and has become a very active and involved member in the community. Charlie has strengths in multiple areas and shares his kindness and positive energy with peers, faculty and members of the community. Since elementary school, Charlie has been a strong football and basketball player. This year Charlie was voted by his team mates to be a leader and Captain of both teams. His talent doesn’t end there; Charlie is an active member in the National Honor Society and has been since his sophomore year. Some people may recognize Charlie from the Steamboat Springs Drama Troupe. He played major roles in Murder in the Knife Room, A Chorus Line, The Foreigner, Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and Legally Blonde, as well as the lead role in Little Shop of Horrors. Charlie has been working on improving his theater skills by taking voice lessons since the summer of 2014.
One of Charlie’s largest strengths is his ability to lead and always stay positive. By showing a strong presence in the community, while also having a fun, energetic personality, he is a great role model for his fellow peers. Since his freshman year he has been a Colorado Model UN Officer, attended West Point’s Summer Leadership Experience, attends Colorado Boys State and been involved in Rocky Mountain Rotary Youth Leadership. This past year, Charlie also became a member of the Sexual Assault Awareness Club. When asking Charlie what keeps him motivated, his response was, “One thing that motivates me to be involved is essentially the fear of missing out. Through the involvement that I have had, I have met incredible people, had amazing experiences, and felt that I have made a positive impact on those around me.”
For fun, Charlie enjoys woodworking, reading, singing and hanging with friends and family. In the future Charlie hopes to attend a US Service Academy or a University. He has dreams of serving in the military or pursuing a career in mathematics and science. He has a very close relationship with his parents and siblings and has seen them as mentors and role models throughout his life. Charlie feels it is important for teens to be valued in our community because, “It is a fact that gratitude and respect reciprocate. Appreciation for the input and contributions that teens have in our community generates a mutually beneficial relationship between the two.”
One of Charlie’s greatest accomplishments was becoming a Junior Counselor for the Rocky Mountain Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. We are all lucky to have teens like Charlie in our community!
Congratulations Charlie! Charlie will be awarded with a $25 Chamber Gift Certificate and will be featured in the Steamboat Today newspaper.
About the Steamboat Springs Teen Council: The SSTC, in its 10th consecutive year, works to increase positive leadership development, involve teens in the community at large, and provide substance free and alternative activities for youth. The program is sponsored by the City of Steamboat Springs and Grand Futures Prevention Coalition. The SSTC is funded through a grant from Routt County United Way and the Craig-Scheckman Family Foundation.
