The Sales and Use Tax rates within the City of Steamboat Springs will decrease by 0.25% going from 4.75% to 4.5% starting January 1, 2017. Referendum 2B was passed by voters in November of 2011, and allowed for .25% of funding to be dedicated for use by the Local Marketing District to support commercial Air Service to the Yampa Valley Regional Airport in Hayden, CO. This referendum is set to expire on December 31, 2016.
The change should be fairly straightforward for businesses engaged in selling typical merchandise, food, goods and some services. The City will work with business that are engaged in booking advanced reservations now for future stays, or that enter into lease contracts or equipment rental contracts that will span into next year – in order to evaluate their system limitations and revenue recognition methods. Businesses that have systems that can accommodate for the collection of the two different tax rates: 4.75% for the remainder of 2016 and 4.50% effective the beginning of 2017, can make those changes at any time. Alternatively, businesses may use the tax rate at the time of booking or contract execution date as long as the accounting method is consistent.
The online sales tax filing system and paper forms will be adjusted to accommodate for this change. Please contact the Sales Tax Department at the City Steamboat Springs with any questions at 970-879-2060 or salestax@steamboatsprings.net.
