Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue was dispatched 2555 Copper Ridge Drive for the report of a Structure Fire. Initial Response included Engine 6-2 (crew of 4) and Ambulance 6-1 (crew of 2) and Staff 6-2 (1 Chief Officer). Steamboat Springs Police Department officers were first on scene and confirmed that there was a large amount of smoke in the area. Captain Hetrick requested mutual aid of West Routt Fire Protection District who responded with Engine 7-2 (crew of 4). Upon arrival on scene Captain Hetrick walked completely around the building and determined that there were flames visible through the garage door while the remainder of the Engine 6-2 crew and Ambulance 6-1crew secured a water supply from the hydrant and deployed two 1 ¾ inch fire hoses from the engine. The building use was determined to be a medium size warehouse housing a custom cabinet business.

A second request for additional off duty crew was aired by Routt County Communications which resulted in the response of Truck 6-2 (105 foot Aerial staffed by 3 off duty firefighters). Ambulance 6-3 (crew of 2) was able to clear from the medical call they were on during that time period and also responded.

Ambulance 6-1 crew forced entry in to the man door by the garage and then searched the building for any occupants while Engine 6-2 crew applied water to the visible flames putting out all visible fire. After knocking down the visible fire and completing the search of the warehouse it was determined that the fire had entered the void space between the 20 foot ceiling and the roof. Both the hose team and the search crew then exited the structure waiting for the arrival of Truck 6-2 which was necessary for roof operations.

Once Truck 6-2 arrived on scene their crew provided roof ventilation by cutting multiple holes in the roof with a chain saw. The holes allowed the heated gas and smoke to escape the building and allowed the hose crews from West Routt Fire and Steamboat Fire to apply water to the fire. Water was applied through the holes in the roof and the soffits of the building which eventually extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Fire Marshal. Fire damage is estimated to be greater than $500,000.
