Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue was paged to a "Fire Unknown" by Routt County Communications. Updates from dispatch included that neighbors in the area of County Road 14A can see flames on the hillside and smell smoke in the area. Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue responded with 8 on Duty Personnel, one Reserve member, and one off Duty FireFighter staffing One Fire Engine, two 2000 gallon Water Tenders and one Ambulance. Once Engine 6-1 turned the corner on to Highway 131 Captain Hetrick could see flames visible in the distance and asked for the assitance of Oak Creek Fire Protection District who responded with a requested 2500 gallon Water Tender.
Engine 6-1 arrived on scene to see a fully involved log cabin where the roof had already fallen in. A defensive strategy was initiated by a Captain Hetrick and initial focus was to put out the flames which had caused nearby grass and Gamble Oak trees to catch fire. Once the threat of a structure caused Wildland fire was mitigated fire crews focused on knocking down the flames involving the cabin. Using 8000 gallons of water and foam crews were able to extinguish all visible flames on the structure.
The structure is considered a totally loss with damages estimated at $100,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Fire Investigations and the Routt County Sheriff's office.
