Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue was dispatched to Eagle Soaring RV Park for the report of an explosion and a recreational vehicle on fire. Steamboat Springs Responded with 8 on duty personnel staffing 1 ambulance, 1 fire engine and 1 2000 gallon water tender. Five off duty personnel staffed an additional water tender, 2 Chief vehicles with 2 additional personnel standing by at the mountain station to cover any additional calls. A mutual aid request for a water tender was provided by West Routt Fire Protection District. On the way to the fire updates from Routt County Communications stated that one person had been pulled from the fire and there were potentially 2 dogs in the vehicle.
The Central Station Ambulance (6-1) was the first Fire apparatus on scene and assumed care of the injured party. The individual had been pulled 75 feet from the burning vehicle by former Sheriff John Warner and off duty Fire Engineer Chris Welch. The individual was transported to Yampa Valley Medical Center with burn/explosion injuries.
When Engine 6-1 arrived on scene Captain Scott Hetrick had the crew pull a 1 ¾ water line off the fire engine. Using firefighting foam and water from the water tenders the crew worked on putting out the fire and keeping it from igniting a nearby vehicle. The recreational vehicle was considered a total loss and both dogs were determined to be deceased.
Damage is determined be around $20,000. The cause of the fire is under investigation by Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue Fire Marshall and the Routt County Sheriff’s Office. Jefferson County Bomb Squad has been dispatched to the location to search for any secondary explosive devices. For further questions please contact Captain Scott Hetrick at 970-879-7170.
