STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 2, 2024-After an extensive national search, Yampa Valley resident and human resources executive with more than 20-years of experience, Tasha Murphy, has been named as the new Human Resources & Risk Director for the City of Steamboat Springs.
“Tasha stood out through a competitive interview process and was the clear choice to lead the department,” said City Manager Gary Suiter. “The city and community are fortunate to have someone of Tasha’s caliber, not to mention her strong desire and commitment to serve the community, join our organization.”
As director, Murphy will be responsible for the city’s most important resources – its employees. In her role, she will oversee recruitment and retention, compensation and benefits, performance management, training and development, legal compliance, and risk management. The position also serves on the city’s leadership team. The HR department supports more than 250 full-time employees and up to 350-400 part-time, seasonal, and temporary employees.
“I love this community and have worked really hard in my career to make living here a reality,” said Tasha Murphy. “I am thrilled to have the opportunity to contribute my experience to the city organization; and, more importantly, to serve the place I have loved my whole life.”
With a passion for the Yampa Valley since an early age, Murphy moved to Steamboat Springs almost a year ago after she and her husband Michael purchased Mountain Window & Door Steamboat Springs, a 20-year locally owned and operated business. Growing up, her family visited Steamboat Springs several times a year for many years and this is the place she first learned to ski.
Prior to making the decision to relocate to Colorado, she served as the global Vice President of Human Resources for Newpark Resources, overseeing a team of 38 people in eight countries which championed culture and core values, instituted diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies and programs, and solidified total rewards offerings for staff spread around the world in 23 different countries.
Over her career, Murphy has held numerous HR operational leadership positions including with Anadarko Petroleum Corporation, previously one of the world’s largest independent oil and natural gas companies, and Alvarez & Marsal Business Consulting, which for the past four decades has helped organizations tackle complex business issues and boost performance. In addition, she has diverse and versatile human resource experiences spanning across Africa, Europe, and Asia.
Murphy holds a Master of Science in Marketing degree and a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Texas A&M University. She is a Certified Compensation Professional (CCP), Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), and a Senior Certified Professional for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM-SCP). Community service has always been important to Murphy. At a young age, she earned the highest honor in Girl Scouts, the Gold Award, for identifying and addressing issues in her community and, continuing this theme of service through her adult life, enjoys serving through her local church.
Reporting directly to the City Manager, Murphy started in her new role earlier this week on April 29, 2024.
