[ARCHIVED] Fish Creek Water Plant Phase 2 Upgrades Start Flowing April

Fish Creek Plant Upgrades NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-March 20, 2024-After successfully implementing the first phase of upgrades to the Fish Creek Water Plant, Mt. Werner Water & Sanitation District (MWW) will begin the next phase of its Plant Improvement Project starting Monday, April 1, 2024. A 45-day plant shutdown will be required in the spring and a subsequently longer shutdown in the fall.

“Significant improvements were completed last year and Phase 2B continues the work to ensure that the plant makes the most of our liquid lifeblood for decades to come,” commented Mt. Werner Water & Sanitation District General Manager Frank Alfone.

On April 1, Phase 2B commences with a full shutdown of the Fish Creek Water Treatment Plant that will last approximately 45 days running through May 15. During that time, water will be supplied solely via the Yampa Wells Treatment Plant until the Fish Creek Plant is back online.

During last year’s projects, the wells provided the necessary flows and project managers fully anticipate the same will occur again this time. However, both agencies are asking for everyone’s conservation assistance to ensure efficient operations while drawing water from the wells.

The project will install new chemical feed systems and water quality monitoring equipment to comply with the Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment’s approved treatment plan. In addition, a new standby generator, which will be capable of powering all current and future systems; paving and grading improvements; and enhancing numerous feed systems will also be a part of the work.

“The community’s efforts to conserve water during Phase 2B this spring will provide for a smoother project,” said the city’s Distribution & Collection Manager Michelle Carr. “We’ll call upon water consumers to a greater degree again this fall during the second scheduled shut down for this project.”

Potable water from Fish Creek and the Yampa River is treated the same and completely safe for consumption. Since the Yampa River carries more minerals than Fish Creek, some may experience a slight difference in taste than used to.

The water department will conduct extra monitoring of water use during the improvement project. Anyone can report water waste through the online reporting system
