STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-September 6, 2022-Steamboat Springs is an easy and laid-back place, but when your flow is interrupted it can flood your world with big complications. So, the city is starting a culvert rehabilitation project at four locations to upgrade critical water infrastructure.
“There should be little impacts to roadways during this important project,” commented Public Works Engineer Bjorn Utu. “However, in these four locations, folks will see shoulder and bike lane closures during the work.”
The project could see mobilization and storage of equipment start as early as September 8 in a portion of the Barn Village Parking Lot, with work commencing four days later (9/12). Crews will work in four locations over a five-to-seven-day period to upgrade eight deteriorating culverts that play a key role in the city’s streamflow management system.
Culverts of concern are in Central Park Drive (4), Pine Grove Road (2), Clubhouse Drive (1) and Natches Way (1). The project will reline the existing corrugated steel culvert with form fitted PVC piping using a trenchless procedure that minimizes disturbance to adjacent roadways. PVC piping is used in a wide variety of applications including drinking water to fire sprinklers to stormwater management such as this aspect.
Trenchless construction can be used for replacement or rehabilitation efforts and utilizes the existing pipeline. The new pipeline is placed within the existing pipe and formed to the previous pipe. Although, the diameter of the new pipe is smaller the use of a smooth PVC pipe vs a rough corrugated pipe increases its ability to transport water. This is all conducted while the surface remains unaffected as opposed to open trench construction.
“Even though you pass by these culverts every day, it’s easy to forget how important they are, and the role played in transferring water safely and efficiently,” continued Utu. “We appreciate everyone’s patience during the project and again, I don’t believe there will be significant impacts to traffic.”
