STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-September 20, 2021-In an effort to help protect the community’s number one natural resource, Parks & Recreation will begin a new restoration and access project on the Yampa River this week. The ten-week project, located behind the Flour Mill, will improve river access, aquatic habitat, bank stabilization and recreational opportunities.
“We are excited to see things start flowing on this highly anticipate project along the Yampa River” said Matt Barnard, Parks & Recreation Project Manager. “Not only will these improvements provide great benefits to local recreationalists, they will also enhance and protect the riparian ecosytems that plays such a critical role in our local community”.
On Wednesday, September 22, crews from Diggin’ It Riverworks will start to get their feet wet on the project. The banks along this reach of the river will be reinforced and stabilized using large boulders and a natural stone egress will be created for easy river access.
In addition, the area along the bank will be developed into a small pocket park, complete with benches for river gazing and a soft surface trail. Additional vegetation and trees will be planted along the riverbanks to provide shade and help cool river temperatures during the hot summer months.
Intermittent closures and detours along the Yampa River Core Trail will be necessary during this project. For your safety, please adhere to all posted signage and detours. The work is expected to take approximately 10 weeks and should be complete by the beginning of December.
Basalt-based Diggin It’ Riverworks is a small company specializing in white water park constructions, river restoration, excavation and fish habitats. The company has worked on projects throughout the state including Avon, Basalt, Durango, Glenwood Springs, Vail, and the Roaring Fork Valley.
