StoryWalk NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-September 14, 2021-Young children, and adults too, will literally be walking their way through the pages of the new StoryWalk® Project, an innovative and educational way to enjoy reading and the outdoors at the same time.

“When you can combine the world of reading with the outdoors, kids’ imaginations are sure to soar,” said Parks, Open Space and Trails Manager Craig Robinson. “Parks & Recreation is always open to partnering on interactive programs like this that ignites passion for year-round learning.”

Steamboat Springs’ first StoryWalk book will be unveiled on Saturday, September 25, at 10am on the Yampa River Core Trail, across the river from the Stockbridge Transit Center. The outdoor learning project is a partnership between the Bud Werner Memorial Library, Routt County United Way’s Women United and the City of Steamboat Springs.

“We would love the community to join us this Saturday to experience this unique outdoor literacy program,” commented Bud Werner Memorial Library’s Youth Services Librarian Jamie Collins. “A featured story will be on display for a limited time before a new book is installed to ensure reading is fun, innovative and becomes a life-long passion.”

“Twenty story pages from a children’s book will be mounted on posts so individuals and families can walk along the path, read the story page by page, and enjoy fun learning activities that build essential literacy skills,” said Ellen Kendall, literacy chair for Routt County United Way’s Women United. “New stories will be shared in the same location on a year-round basis.”

Leaving his beloved meadow behind helps Hare discover what makes it such a special place in this captivating book, The Best Place in the World, from acclaimed author-illustrator Petr Horácek. Horacek’s book will be Steamboat Springs’ first StoryWalk and on display outdoors into mid-October.

StoryWalk® stories have been installed in all 50 states and 13 countries including, Germany, Canada, England, Bermuda, Russia, Malaysia, Pakistan, and South Korea. StoryWalk®, a registered service mark, was created by Anne Ferguson of Montpelier, VT and developed in collaboration the Kellogg Hubbard Library.
