STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-August 2, 2021-The city will host a public open house to answer questions and review preliminary plans for proposed improvements to the Downhill Drive/US40 intersection this Thursday.
“The intersection is already a high priority for improvement,” said City Engineer Ben Beall. “Traffic modeling shows that potential growth on the westside of town will make the need more pronounced. Completing the design and putting the city in a shovel-ready position to build the intersection when funding becomes available is the current objective.”
The event is scheduled for Thursday, August 5 from 4pm to 6pm at the Community Center located at 1605 Lincoln Avenue. Plans are also available on the EngageSteamboat for review. Feedback can be provided in person at the open house or online.
Baseline Engineering has been hired by the city to design the intersection. The planned improvements include aligning Downhill Drive and Riverside Drive, installing signals, planning for the future 4-lanes on US40, and improving pedestrian, bicycle, and transit service to the intersection.
So far, survey and initial design is complete. The city has also met with property owners immediately adjacent to the project limits. The open house is an opportunity for those in surrounding neighborhoods or anyone with an interest in the project to meet with staff and design engineers to review the plans, ask questions, and provide feedback to help inform the project.
Following the meeting, the city anticipates approximately 18 months until design is complete. Moving forward the city will receive approvals from the Colorado Department of Transportation, work to finalize property negotiations, coordinate utility relocations, and obtain permits.
“A project of this scale takes time to come together. Now is the best time to receive feedback from the public as the plans are still preliminary,” said Beall.
