STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 26, 2021-The Snake Island Pedestrian Bridges, key links on the Yampa River Core Trail in the downtown area, are slated for refurbishment starting Monday, August 2 and running through Friday, September 24. During this time, the bridges will be closed to the public and a detour will be required to travel around the impacted area.
“Outdoor features like these bridges take a beating from changes in weather including hot dry temperatures as we’ve seen to months of snow and below freezing conditions,” said Parks Projects Manager Matt Barnard. “This project is vital to ensuring the structures remain in a safe and structurally sound condition.”
The city has contracted with Sloop Painting to complete the upcoming refurbishment decking and painting project. The bridges cross the Yampa River with the first bridge located near Rich Weiss Park and the second bridge from Snake Island to the Core Trail underpass near Parks & Recreation office.
Currently, the decking is rough, splitting, and in need of repair and will be completely replaced. The bridges will also be painted as the current paint has deteriorated over time. Overnight temperatures and dew point will be an important factor in how quickly the bridge will be able to be painted.
Sloop Painting is no stranger to this type of project as they did the work on the Soda Creek Bridge last year and Fish Creek Bridge two years ago. Plans are to begin work on the morning of Monday, August 2, and the project is expected to take eight weeks with the two bridges reopening by Friday, September 24.
Detour Information: A detour will be set up so that Core Trail users can bypass the closed area by using the sidewalk along Lincoln Ave to 5th Street; then 5th Street to rejoin the Core Trail and vice versa. Please slow down when traveling through these areas.
