STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 1, 2021-Mt. Werner Water & Sanitation District (MWWSD) is moving to the next segment of the Sewer Interceptor Replacement Project which will require a shoulder closure and reconfiguring the on-ramp access for travelers heading from Mt Werner Road to US40 westbound toward downtown Steamboat Springs.
“This portion of the project will see both pedestrian and vehicle impacts,” commented General Manager Frank Alfone. “While we believe these will be limited and easily navigated, we greatly appreciate everyone’s patience and cooperation when traveling through the work zone.”
This segment, which runs through mid-October, installs 3,000 liner feet of new pipe along and under US40 and the westbound on-ramp of Mt. Werner Road. Native Excavating will begin mobilizing Tuesday, July 6 with Variable Message Sign Display Boards and other signage informing travelers of the shoulder closure, reconfiguration of the on-ramp access and construction work. The through lanes of US 40 will not be impacted by construction.
Before Native Excavating, Inc can install the new sewer main, they must remove the existing sewer main and it is not as easy as just shutting off service. Since sewer use runs 24-hours a day, 7 days a week, it is necessary to use a by-pass pump and piping to ensure sewer service continues flowing during the pipe change.
The project has been issued a noise ordinance variance by the city, but individuals at the Pines at Ore House Condominiums, Pine Grove Professionals Offices and to a lesser extent Walmart and Central Park Plaza buildings may hear by-pass operations despite the quieter generator.
Project work will run Monday-Friday during daylight hours with no work currently anticipated on weekends. The closure and detour along the Yampa River Core Path between Rotary Park and Fetcher Pond and the new on-ramp impacts will remain in effect through mid-October.
The design parameters for the project were based on the results of the MWWSD Sanitary Sewer Trunk Replacement Master Plan performed by Civil Design Consultants. Engineering and Design Plans was prepared by Landmark Consultants, Inc. and Native Excavating Inc. is the General Contractor
The two-year project has Phase 2 taking place this summer through October 15, followed by Phase 3 during the summer of 2022. Both Phase 2 & 3 of the project are funded in part with a Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority Loan (3M).
