[ARCHIVED] Old Infrastructure Flows Out with Mt. Werner Water Project

Pipe 2 NewsFlash

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-June 7, 2021-Mt. Werner Water & Sanitation District (MWWSD) is undertaking a major infrastructure improvement project when it installs 3,000 liner feet of new sewer pipe as part of Phase 2 of its Sewer Interceptor Replacement Project set to begin Monday, June 14, 2021.

“This project brings significant enhancements to the overall system,” said Mt. Werner Water & Sanitation District General Manager Frank Alfone. “While there will be impacts to both vehicular and pedestrian traffic at times, the finished project will benefit the community for decades to come.”

The Interceptor project consists of replacing approximately 5,600 liner feet of existing sanitary sewer trunk collection main and associated structures, approximately 25 manholes and a sanitary sewer junction box. The new pipe material is composed of polyvinyl chloride (PVC) the world’s third-most widely produced synthetic plastic polymer. The new equipment replaces aging materials that have reached the end of their useful life.

Phase 2 requires a closure and detour of the sidewalk along the Yampa River Core Path south of Fetcher Pond to Alpine Lumber. An additional closure of the sidewalk at US40 and Mt. Werner Road will also be implemented in late July. Both set of closures and detours will run through the duration of the work into mid-October.

The Phase 2 detour mirrors when this section of the core trail is typically closed due to flooding with travelers heading along the sidewalk south of US40 to Pine Grove Rd, then west back along the north side of Fetcher Pond to the Core Trail.

The design parameters for the project were based on the results of the MWWSD Sanitary Sewer Trunk Replacement Master Plan performed by Civil Design Consultants. Engineering and Design Plans was prepared by Landmark Consultants, Inc. and Native Excavating Inc. is the General Contractor

The two-year project has Phase 2 taking place this summer from June 14 through October 15, followed by Phase 3 during the summer of 2022. Both Phase 2 & 3 of the project are funded in part with a Colorado Water Resources and Power Development Authority Loan (3M).
