STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-June 1, 2021-The city has published the preliminary April 2021 sales, use, and accommodation tax report. The April 2021 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 71.70% higher compared to the April 2020 collections or an increase of $744,689.
Last April’s sales tax revenues were adversely affected by the ski area closure and the restrictions on short term accommodations. For a better reference, April 2021 collections are 28.5% higher compared to April 2019. For the past 5 years, April collections represent about 5% of annual collections. Year to date sales tax collection is 16.40% more than year to date through April 2020.
When comparing this April to the same month last year there were notable increases in collections by category in all categories over last April. There were no notable decreases since all categories rebounded from April last year. Notable increases in collections by area were also seen across the board.
Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. April collections were up substantially compared to the same period last year. Year to date accommodations tax is up 11.29% compared to the same period last year.
Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. April net use tax collections total $495,668. Year to date net use tax collections is up 253% through the same period last year.
