STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 3, 2021-The city has published the preliminary March 2021 sales, use, and accommodation tax report. The March 2021 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 46.35% higher compared to the March 2020 collections or an increase of $1,109,181.
Last March’s sales tax revenues were adversely affected by the ski area closure and the restrictions on short term accommodations. For a better reference, March 2021 collections are 6.58% higher compared to March 2019. For the past 5 years, March collections represent about 11% of annual collections. Year to date sales tax collection is 9.13% more than year to date through March 2020.
When comparing this March to the same month last year the notable increases in collections by category are in sporting goods at 98.14%, and lodging & amenities at 74.45% over last March. There were no notable decreases since all categories rebounded from March last year. Notable increases in collections by area include an increase of 98.69% for Out of Town and 65.64% for Downtown.
Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. March collections were up 71.14% compared to the same period last year. Year to date accommodations tax is up 2.30% compared to the same period last year.
Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. March net use tax collections total $220,493. Year to date net use tax collections is up 121% through the same period last year.
