STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-February 21, 2021-Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) was dispatched by Routt County Communications Center (RCCC) to Mile Marker 153 Highway 40 for a two-vehicle head on accident with injuries at 1:26pm on Sunday, February 21, 2021. Mile Marker 153 is the border of Routt and Grand Counties.

SSFR responded with all on duty apparatus and personnel, two ambulances, one fire engine and the on-call Deputy Chief. Updates from RCCC indicated that Craig Fire Rescue Chief Hume, was on scene with four patients, one critically injured, and three with serious injuries.
Highway 40 was closed in both directions due to the accident. Captain Hetrick immediately called for Classic Air Medical to be put on airborne standby and for Grand County EMS & Fire to respond for assistance. Upon arrival of SFFR apparatus, crews discovered high winds and a ground blizzard making it impossible to utilize the helicopter services of the Classic Air Medical.
The critically injured patient was immediately loaded into Ambulance 6-3 and transported emergent to UC Health at Yampa Valley Medical Center (UC Health). Upon arrival of Ambulance 6-2, two patients were loaded into the ambulance with serious injuries and transported emergent to UC Health. The fourth patient with minor injuries was driven by Grand County EMS to UC Health in Steamboat Springs. Eleven EMS personnel from SSFR and Grand County were required to transport and care for the four injured individuals.
While all on duty personnel were tied up with accident on Highway 40, SSFR received an additional call for service. Four off duty personnel responded from home to cover Steamboat Springs and transport an injured party from the ski area while ski patrol took care of the patient until EMS arrival.
