STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-February 16, 2021-The city has published the Final December 2020 sales, use, and accommodation tax report. The December 2020 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 3.6% lower compared to the December 2019 collections or a decrease of $134,140. For the past 5 years, December collections represent about 13% of annual collections. Year to date sales tax collection is 1.32% less than year to date through December 2019.
When comparing this December to the same month last year the notable increases in collections by category are in utilities at 17.39%, and miscellaneous retail at 14.80% over last December. Notable decreases were reflected in the restaurant, down 30.44%, and lodging & amenities categories, down 22.93%. On November 20, 2020 the state moved the county to level red, which closed indoor dining. This restriction was not lifted until December 18, 2020 when the state moved the county to level orange plus which allowed indoor dining at 25% capacity.
Notable increases in collections by area include an increase of 23.35% for Out of Town and 14.18% for West Steamboat. On the flip side, the mountain area and downtown were substantially down compared to the same period last year.
Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. December collections were down 23.10% compared to the same period last year. Year to date accommodations tax is down 11.87% compared to the same period last year.
Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. December net use tax collections total $297,447. Year to date net use tax collections are down 8% through the same period last year.
