STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-November 2, 2020-The city has published the preliminary September 2020 sales, use, and accommodation tax report. The September 2020 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs are 12.75% more compared to the September 2019 collections or an increase of $281,868. For the past 5 years, September collections represent about 8% of annual collections. Year to date sales tax collection is 3.44% less than year to date through September 2019.
When comparing this September to the same month last year, ALL categories saw increases except for Utilities which was essentially flat. The notable increases in collections by category are in Liquor Stores at 33.88%, Sporting Goods 19.56%, and Miscellaneous Retail at 15.85% over last September.
Notable increases in collections by area include an increase of 44.19% for Out of Town (new reporting category) and 14.48% for Highway 40 Corridor. Previously reported in Regional, Out of Town will now be listed separately and includes businesses that sell direct to customers located in the city via online or other methods. Out of Town businesses may include Amazon, Home Depot, and a Sign Shop in Frisco, Colorado or another independent business. Regional includes businesses based in Routt or Moffat County and sell in multiple areas within city limits. Regional business may include utility providers and businesses related to the sharing economy.
Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects since the Yampa Street improvements portion of referendum 2A was completed last year. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. September collections were up 9.91% compared to the same period last year. Year to date accommodations tax is down 12.28% compared to the same period last year.
Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. September net use tax collections total $185,578. Year to date net use tax collections are down 35% through the same period last year.
