[ARCHIVED] Howelsen Core Trail Tunnel Closed

Howelsen Tunnel

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-September 17, 2020-The tunnel on the Yampa River Core Trail that runs under the railroad tracks and connects Historic Howelsen Hill to Yampa Street will be closed for scheduled maintenance.

Starting Monday, September 21 and running through Thursday, September 24, contractors will seal the joints in the tunnel. Constructed of precast concrete box culvert sections, the joint sealing material has lost its ability to hold back water. Crews will inject an epoxy resin into the joints which will bond with the concrete surfaces. The process to reseal the area will help prevent further water seeping into the tunnel.

A detour will go into effect on Monday that requires trail users to travel along Yampa Street between 5th Street and 10th Street during the closure. Signage will be in place on Monday assisting in navigating the temporary route.

Keep in mind that the Soda Creek Bridge, near the Bud Werner Memorial Library, is also currently closed for a complete overhaul.  Please respect both closures and allow project crews to complete their work in an efficient and timely manner.
