STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 30, 2020-Is your vehicle locked right now? The Steamboat Springs Police Department is reporting an uptick in a rash of thefts from vehicles, especially on the south side of town.
“It’s tempting to leave your car unlocked or running, even if for a quick errand inside, but that creates an opportunity for theft” said Steamboat Springs Police Chief Cory Christensen. “Why make it easy for thieves? Simply lock your vehicle; it is a simple step you can take to prevent theft and losing valuables.”
Officers have responded to several vehicles that have been broken into during the past few weeks. Generally, these vehicles have been left unlocked with most incidents taking place on the south side of the city.
Incidents like this are crimes of opportunity. Basically, the individual sees something they like and break in to take it. If you leave your doors unlocked, it’s an even more inviting situation. So, before you leave your vehicle consider the following:
- Never leave your vehicle running without being in it – it’s an open invitation to a thief.
- Always lock your vehicle and close windows and sunroof
- Do not store valuables in the vehicle or put them out of sight
- If must leave items, put them in trunk and not the glove box
- Park in visible locations – thieves don’t want to draw attention to themselves
“We live in a pretty safe community, but we’re not immune to crimes such as this,” continued Christensen. “Locking your vehicle and for that matter, your home, will go a long way in deterring crimes like this.”
Another reason to lock your vehicle is preventing bears from getting inside and causing significant damage. The community has seen the damage bears can do to vehicles when trapped inside.
