STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 28, 2020-Colorado Governor Jared Polis signed two proclamations honoring July as Parks & Recreation Month and today, July 28, as Parks & Recreation Professionals Day.
“We think every day should be Parks & Recreation day, but having the governor highlight this amazing group of individuals is truly a distinguished honor,” said Parks & Recreation Director Angela Cosby. “When your backyard is several thousand acres, it takes a great crew going the extra mile to provide the fantastic outdoor amenities we all love in our community, and this hasn’t been more evident than during this pandemic.”
The governor highlighted the efforts of park staffs across the state as they work tirelessly throughout the COVID-19 crisis to ensure that local parks, trails and open spaces remain accessible to all. In addition, he mentioned the benefits these efforts have had to keep Coloradans active and healthy during the pandemic.
The services that park and recreation professionals provide are vital for our communities — from protecting open space and natural resources, to providing fitness programs, and, recently, providing essential services throughout the COVID-19 pandemic — Park and Recreation Month encourages everyone to reflect on the exponential value park and recreation professionals bring to communities.
Since 1985, the National Parks and Recreation Association has recognized July as Parks & Recreation Month, celebrating the achievements of Parks & Recreation agencies across the country and the vital and powerful role of local park and recreation professionals. Now, July 28, will also honor the people who power our parks.
Steamboat Springs’ Park Sites span six mineral springs, a historic ski area, ice complex and rodeo arena, two skate parks, 10 playgrounds, three volleyball courts, botanic park and tennis center, acclaimed public golf course, miles of trails, free-flowing Yampa River and 22 athletic fields. Those numbers don’t include the vast array of recreation programs that range from toddlers to adults put on annually. Remember, access to and use of the city’s parks, open space, trails and river is free.
