STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 28, 2020-Improving flow and safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians are some of the influences behind a proposal by the city for a roundabout at the intersection of Mt. Werner Road and Steamboat Blvd looming on the horizon. Currently, the roundabout is under design and construction is planned for 2021.
“We’ve seen the effects of installing traffic features at Après Ski Way and Ski Time Square,” said Project Manager and Public Works Engineer Danny Paul. “This project will significantly enhance safety and define travel lanes for all users immediately but also has an eye for the future.”
Under the proposal, there will be two lanes westbound (toward US40) and one lane eastbound (headed to ski mountain) that will be able to be expanded to two lanes in the future when traffic increases to warrant another lane. The roundabout has been appropriately sized to perform well even during Steamboat’s busiest winter weekends.
This will be the first two-lane roundabout of its kind in Steamboat and very similar to those found in other mountain communities. The total project is expected to cost more than $4M to complete and will be a significant improvement for the many vehicles, pedestrians, and bicyclists that travel through the intersection every day.
The project will also replace an existing drainage pipe to accommodate the 100-year flood. New sidewalks, formalizing existing bus stops, landscaping beautification, street and pedestrian lighting are part of the overall scope.
As many projects taking place during the coronavirus, the project team had to adapt in the ways public input is generated. For the roundabout, informational display boards will be mobilized and available for viewing by early August and will remain in place for one to two months to provide an opportunity for individuals to take in. In addition, essential materials about the project, including site plan, description, FAQs, contact information and public comment avenues, will be open through EngageSteamboat.net/Roundabout.
Final design and construction are subject to approval by the Steamboat Springs City Council and the Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority through the 2020 budget adoption.
