STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-July 1, 2020-The Butcherknife Creek Floodplain Improvements Project will hit a milestone when it paves 7th Street between Lincoln Avenue and Oak Street starting on Thursday, July 2, immediately followed by striping the next day, Friday, July 3. This achievement will allow this portion of 7th Street to open to the public for the Fourth of July holiday weekend.
“The project was able to get off to a quick start in April,” commented Mike Beurskens, Civil Engineer with the City of Steamboat Springs. “Everyone’s hard work over the last three months pays off when we reopen this popular segment of 7th Street ahead of the holiday.”
After the weekend, the work moves south when a portion of 7th Street between Lincoln Avenue and Yampa Street will be closed starting Monday, July 6. The closure will last approximately two months and will focus on drainage and utility work.
Sidewalk access to businesses will remain open and the Farmers Market will continue to use a portion of 7th Street next to Yampa Street every Saturday. Alley access to businesses and parking garages will be via 8th Street.
The project includes construction of a concrete box culvert that will carry Butcherknife Creek, relocation of existing utilities, drainage improvements and sidewalks. The city will also install a mechanized stormwater treatment device at this site and a new, year-round, public restroom adjacent to Eagle Scout Park and the parking lot at the intersection of 7th Street and Yampa Street.
The $2.5M Butcherknife Creek Improvement Project is funded from $1.61M in matching city funds and the $800,000 DOLA and $90,000 Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment’s (CDPHE) Water Quality Improvement Fund grants. This project began in April and because of mud season and slowdowns contributed to COVID the project was able to get off to quick start. The project completion date is October 15, 2020.
