STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-May 7, 2020-The Yampa River Botanic Park (YRBP) will be celebrating National Public Gardens Week beginning tomorrow, May 8, and running through May 17, and invites the community to visit the park and participate in celebratory activities during this time.
National Public Gardens Week was established to drive local and national exposure to the importance of building vibrant, relevant gardens committed to community enrichment and environmental responsibility through community engagement, sustainable practices and conservation.
“Visiting public gardens is not just a matter of observing nature’s beauty in managed landscapes”, said Jennifer MacNeil, executive director of the YRBP. “Visiting these spaces awakens our sanity, optimism, and happiness. Now more than ever, it is a time to celebrate the Botanic Park and the many ways it impacts the community.”
Parks & Recreation staff will also be celebrating National Public Gardens Week by working on landscaping throughout the city’s parks and public gardens. To aid in this effort, Botanic Park staff will conduct training for city staff that shares the basics of how to identify plants, weeding techniques and general gardening.
You can join the Botanic Park in celebrating National Public Gardens Week by participating in several activities including:
- Connect with the park and its mission “a place of serenity, celebrating the trees, shrubs, plants and birds of the Yampa Valley” by visiting from dawn until dusk daily.
- Follow the YRBP on Facebook and Instagram #yampariverbotanicpark.
- Share what public gardens mean to you by emailing office@yrbp.org. They will share your responses with the park’s board and staff for inspiration and will celebrate their favorite stories on social media.
- Play a role in protecting and saving plants and supporting the YRBP by downloading the free PlantSnap app, which features 600,000+ plants and 200 million+ plant images. Once a sprawling horse pasture, the six-acre Yampa River Botanic Park is now home to more than 50 unique gardens, thousands of plant and animal species and hosts special events of all shapes and sizes. An innovative experiment in private/public partnerships, the Botanic Park is free and open to the public from dawn to dusk, through October 31.
