SSP News Graphic 2019

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-February 24, 2020-The Steamboat Springs Police Department has concluded an internal investigation into an off-duty incident involving an officer.

“I am sorry for Mr. Nilsson’s loss and know that nothing can replace his beloved Zora,” said Steamboat Springs Police Chief Cory Christensen.

On October 3, 2019, while off-duty, officer Rob Sadowski accidentally shot and killed Mr. Eaton Nilsson’s dog, Zora. Officer Sadowski was cited for Animal Cruelty by the Routt County Sheriff’s Office and like any other community member he was afforded the due process of the local criminal justice system. On December 11, 2019, Officer Sadowski pled “Nolo Contendre” to the charge and paid a fine.

Following the conclusion of the criminal case, an internal investigation was initiated by the Steamboat Springs Police Department. The inquiry included interviews with those present at the time of the accident and Mr. Nilsson. In addition, a review of the case file and associated evidence from the Routt County Sheriff’s Office was also considered.

The internal investigation found that Officer Sadowski violated policies of the Steamboat Springs Police Department, resulting in corrective action and discipline. Officer Sadowski continues to be employed as a police officer for the Steamboat Springs Police Department.
