STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-February 11, 2020-With the world-record single largest firework achieved Saturday evening, February 8, during the 107th Winter Carnival, Steamboat Springs Transit wasn’t about to be out shined as it also made history, setting a new single day record that same day.
“Our buses were busting at the seams all day Saturday,” erupted Transit Manager Jonathan Flint. “The new records we’re experiencing this winter demonstrates that folks are interested in utilizing the free bus during special events like Winter Carnival and extremely happy to leave the driving to us in their daily lives.”
SST buses carried 12,869 passengers on Saturday, eclipsing the old mark (12,034) by more than 800. The previous record was set during WinterWonderGrass 2017. In addition, Saturday’s passenger counts surpassed the previous Winter Carnival record by 1,308 passengers.
Passenger numbers continued to explode over the seven-day period, Feb. 2-9, where SST transported 49,795 passengers. This is a 7% increase over the same period the previous year when 45,402 passengers utilized the city’s transit services.
“SST drivers, supervisors and mechanics did an outstanding job during the heavy snowfall paired with the Winter Carnival,” continued Flint. “Even during adverse driving conditions, they were able to keep the buses moving.”
Although buses were often delayed during the day, service was never interrupted as extra buses assisted carrying the heavy passenger loads safely to their destination. The SST fleet was in high gear after the Night Extravaganza when twelve buses helped disperse spectators (see attached image).
