STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-February 4, 2020-All dogs and cats located in the City of Steamboat Springs and within Routt County are required by law to be licensed yearly. The annual February 1 deadline recently passed, and the city reminds owners who have not secured 2020 licenses to do so immediately.
Dog and cat licenses can be purchased at Routt County Humane Society, 760 Critter Court, or at your own local veterinarian office such as Mountain Peaks Veterinary Clinic, Ski Town Animal Hospital, Pet Kare Clinic and Steamboat Veterinary Hospital.
The price for the license is $5 for altered animals or $25 for unaltered animals. To purchase a license, pet owners will need to provide proof of a current rabies vaccination (certificate and not the metal tag).
Residents within the city limits of Hayden, Oak Creek and Yampa require their own city license. Check with town halls in each location for additional information.
Keep in mind, if you lose your 2020 license after purchasing it for this year, a replacement tag will cost $2, but is only available from the Routt County Humane Society shelter with proof of rabies vaccination.
It’s required by law that all dogs and cats wear the current license on their collar or harness. This is especially important when using the designated off-leash dog parks (Rita Valentine & Spring Creek Park at the Lower Pond only) or off-leash areas (Butcherknife, Sailors Way and Whistler Park) for off-leash activities. These off-leash areas see seasonal changes and current usage is outlined below:
Butcherknife
This trail carries restrictions during school hours where the leash law applies from 7:30am to 8:30am and 3pm to 4:30pm from Aug 21 to June 8.
Sailors Way
The off-leash trail runs directly behind the Steamboat Springs High School. Outside of designated hours, dogs are always to be leashed.
Whistler Park
This area has three designated areas with the park for off leash activities.
