UPDATE: Sloop Painting has completed the refurbishment project on the Fish Creek Pedestrian Bridge ahead of schedule and the highly utilized bridge is back OPEN..

The Fish Creek Pedestrian Bridge, a key link on the Yampa River Core Trail spanning Fish Creek, is slated for refurbishment after the Labor Day holiday weekend and will close during the project.
“We understand the importance of this feature and the role it plays in connecting our community,” said Craig Robinson, Open Space & Trails Manager for the City of Steamboat Springs. “That’s why this project, much like the ones for the 9th Street & Stone Lane pedestrian bridges a few years ago, is vital to ensuring the structure remains in a safe and structurally sound condition.”
The city has contracted with Sloop Painting to complete the upcoming Fish Creek Bridge decking and painting project. The bridge crosses Fish Creek and is located between Alpine Lumber and the Fish Creek Trailer Park along the Core Trail.
Currently, the decking is rough, splitting, and in need of repair and will be completely replaced. The bridge will also be painted as the current paint has deteriorated over time. Overnight temperatures and dew point will be an important factor in how quickly the bridge will be able to be painted.
Sloop Painting will begin work on the morning of Tuesday, September 3, and the project is expected to take four weeks. During this time the bridge will be closed to the public and a detour will be required to travel around the bridge. In addition, a small section behind Alpine Lumber will also be closed.
Detour Information: Traveling south from downtown on the Core Trail, the detour (see attached map) will begin at Trafalgar Drive near Freshies Restaurant. Head up Trafalgar toward US 40/Lincoln Avenue and use the crosswalk to access the sidewalk on the east side of US 40. Down the road, cross back to the west side of US40 using the crosswalk at Anglers Drive or Pine Grove Road. The Core Trail can be accessed by following Pine Grove Road to the Core Trail at Fetcher Pond.
Bicyclists that prefer to detour using the Highway 40 shoulder should follow the rules of the road and travel with the flow of traffic. Additionally, pedestrians are strongly encouraged to cross to the east side of 40/Lincoln to utilize the sidewalk and not walk along the shoulder.
The Core Trail will remain open between Trafalgar Drive and the Fish Creek Trailer Park and Emerald Park and the Botanic Park will still be accessible from the trail. There will be no thru-access past the bridge and pedestrians will be required to turn around at that point. Fish Creek Trailer Park is private property and there is no public access allowed through the trailer park.
