Earlier this year, the City of Steamboat Springs was awarded a $800,000 DOLA grant for the Butcherknife Creek Improvement Project, and the first phase of that work is now slated to start Monday, Sept 9.
Under the oversight of city engineer Michael Beurskens, the Butcherknife project essentially completes the city’s $11-million-dollar, multi-year Downtown Improvement Project and this portion will be constructed by Duckels Construction. Duckels has indicated the work will begin after the Labor Day holiday and is now slated for Monday, September 9, to being construction.
Once work begins, Oak Street between 6th and 7th Streets will CLOSE completely; however, the 6th/Oak and 7th/Oak intersections will remain open. Parking on this block will not be available. The public is encouraged to find alternative routes during this construction phase of the project, which is expected to run through the end of October with the road reopening by Halloween.
The project will construct floodplain and pedestrian improvements along the popular Butcherknife Creek within the old town district. The new infrastructure enhancements, expected to last 30 to 50 years, focus on safety improvements in the area from Oak to Yampa between 6th & 7th Streets.
In addition, the project will replace a nearly 100-year-old and obsolete box culvert along Butcherknife Creek and ties into a culvert installed in 2009 under Highway 40. New sidewalks, stormwater enhancements and streetscape amenities featuring smart technology LED lighting and landscaping will be installed.
The city will also install a mechanized stormwater treatment device at this site, which separates and filters pollutants before reaching the river and a new, year-round, public restroom adjacent to Eagle Scout Park and the parking lot at the intersection of 7th Street and Yampa Street.
The $2.5M Butcherknife Creek Improvement Project is funded from $1.61M in matching city funds and the $800,000 DOLA and $90,000 Colorado Department of Public Health & Environment’s (CDPHE) Water Quality Improvement Fund grants.
