[ARCHIVED] Quick Response By Employee & Police Thwarts Incident

SSP News Graphic 2019

A 60-year-old man was arrested last night, Tuesday, August 13, 2019, after an incident at a local business in Central Park Plaza.

“The quick and calm actions by the store employee along with the fast response from our officers ensured this matter didn’t escalate to something much larger,” said Police Commander Annette Dopplick. “I want to commend the employee for their calm response and quick-thinking and remind everyone that while we live in a small town, we’re not immune to situations such as these.”

David Brown, of Steamboat Springs, Colorado, was taken into custody without incident after he forced a Walmart employee to accompany him through the store against the employee’s will. During that time, Brown collected numerous items from the business and continued to keep the employee from leaving.

The employee was able to use a ruse to gain access to call 911 at 7:11pm. Steamboat Springs Police Officers were on scene less than one minute from the radio advisement of the situation and arrested Brown on probable cause for the offense of robbery, a violation of C.R.S. 18-4-301, a class 4 Felony; and 2nd Degree Kidnapping, a violation of C.R.S. 18-3-302(3)(b) a class 2 Felony.

Anyone with additional information regarding this case or any other crime is encouraged to contact Steamboat Springs Police Detective Silva at 970.879.1144.

All charges are merely accusations and the defendants are presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
