[ARCHIVED] Police Officer Released from Department

SSP News Graphic 2019

The Steamboat Springs Police Department and City of Steamboat Springs has concluded its administrative investigation as a result of the arrest of Police Officer Fabian Avitia last month on Saturday, June 29, 2019.

“We are committed to accountability and it was imperative to conduct this investigation swiftly and fairly and that the outcome would be shared with the community,” commented Police Chief Cory Christensen. “We hold our staff to the highest standards and this incident should not reflect upon the dedicated individuals across the entire department serving our community.”

The administrative investigation determined that Avitia violated several policies of the police department and City of Steamboat Springs. Due to the nature of these violations, Avitia’s employment with the Steamboat Springs Police Department has been terminated.

Avitia was placed on paid leave during the administrative investigation following his arrest.  As this is a personnel matter and the criminal case is ongoing, no further information will be released at this time.

All criminal charges are merely accusations and that the defendant is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.
