Steamboat Springs Fire-Rescue is accepting applications for the 2012 Firefighter I Academy until noon on July 30th! The academy will train individuals to the State Firefighter I certification level which includes a Hazardous Materials Operations level class and certification. The SSFR academy will start with a Physical Ability Test and individual interviews on August 4th and 6th, with the first class taking place on Wednesday August 8th. The class will run until early December.

The Academy does not cost the participant anything but does require a substantial amount of time and effort. Classes will be held every Wednesday night and Saturday morning through early December. Participants will be outfitted with all the appropriate clothing, equipment, and textbooks required to successfully complete the academy.

The academy will train participants in the necessary skills of a basic firefighter such as; hose lays, fire control, auto extrication, firefighter safety and survival, water supply, and ventilation. A live burn is required in order to complete the academy and takes place in the burn building training facility in Hayden.

If successful in completing the Academy, each participant shall be State Certified Fire Fighter I and Haz-Mat Operations level, and will be eligible to apply for a SSFR Reserve Firefighter position. The Reserve Firefighter is required to maintain a minimum of 50 training hours per year, maintain Firefighter I certification and to attend two twelve hour shifts each month. Reserve Firefighters are compensated for their basic certifications and then realize an increase for all additional certifications achieved during their career with SSFR.
