The upper section of a new downhill-only, directional mountain bike trail on Spring Creek has officially opened to the public. The open segment is the first of three sections being built over the summer with the entire downhill trail envisioned to be completed and opened in late fall.
“It’s exciting to have the first part of the new downhill trail open for all to enjoy,” said Open Space & Trails Supervisor Jenny Carey. “However, there are several trail projects underway simultaneously in this area so anticipate other users and remember the entire downhill trail is not complete yet and please ride accordingly.”
The upper portion of the new downhill bike trail is open from the top at Dry Lake on Buffalo Pass and currently ends just above Bridge #6 on Spring Creek Trail. It parallels the original Spring Creek Trail and will relieve congestion once completed by providing a trail exclusively for downhill bike traffic. The trail is designed for intermediate and expert cyclists and should be used for all downhill bike travel along Spring Creek.
Once riders reach the end of the newly opened downhill-only portion, the trail will rejoin the traditional multi-use Spring Creek Trail. Riders should expect to encounter uphill traffic and need to proceed with caution and yield to uphill users.
Two additional sections of the downhill trail will open in phases throughout the summer and fall. Over the next several weeks, Routt County Riders will focus its efforts on the bottom section (below Bridge #5 to County Road #34). The middle section will open last when the crossing over the Gardens Ditch is complete. An official announcement will be made when additional downhill sections are ready and open to the public. Until then, please stay out of closed and/or trail construction zones.
The project has been a partnership between the City of Steamboat Springs and the U.S. Forest Service, which is acting as the project manager. The trail construction for the new downhill trail is funded by 2A tax monies and is being built by Routt County Riders.
