The Steamboat Springs Teen Council (SSTC) is looking for teens who are interested in having their voice heard and impacting critical issues facing their community.
“From peer-to-peer interactions to establishing community-wide programs, the Teen Council provides youth in our community the chance to grow individually and develop as future leaders,” said Youth & Teen Program Coordinator Alexis Wolf. “If teens are looking to make a difference, then the Teen Council is something they should strongly consider.”
The SSTC’s mission is to demonstrate that teens are valuable assets and are caring members of the community who are committed to education, health and wellness, the environment and service. As a channel and resource for all teens, we strive to open lines of communication and provide common ground for teens and adults.
The Council is comprised of high school students, who work together to create a community in which teens have a voice in social, political, and environmental issues. Meetings are held every Wednesday from September through April, from 6:00pm to 7:30pm at Centennial Hall in the Citizen’s Meeting Room.
In addition to putting on events for high schoolers, the council focuses on encouraging other teens to make smart, healthy decisions and acts as a positive role model for children. The group has been a consistent advocate for teens in the community, pledging to stay above the influence of alcohol, tobacco and drugs.
Applications for the 2019/20 School Year are currently being accepted through May 3, 2019. Interested candidates can submit applications to Mackenzie Woodsmall via email or drop off at the Parks & Recreation office located at 245 Howelsen Pkwy. Both Returning Members and New Members must submit a signed application and will participate in an in-person interview in May. In addition, new members must also provide one letter of reference along with the application.
The SSTC has worked for over a decade to increase positive leadership development, involve teens in the community at large, and provide substance free and alternative activities for youth. The program is sponsored by the City of Steamboat Springs and the Boys & Girls Club.
