The City of Steamboat Springs and Native Excavating expect to begin construction of an improved transit stop and enhanced pedestrian crossing at the corner of Walton Creek Road and Chinook Lane this week.
The improvements consist of the construction of a concrete pad at an existing transit stop along Chinook Lane. The transit stop will be connected to the intersection of Chinook Lane and Walton Creek Road via a 250 linear foot sidewalk. Storm sewer improvements including storm sewer inlets and curb and gutter will be installed to mitigate nuisance drainage around the transit stop. At the intersection, improvements will be made to comply with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) in the form of pedestrian ramps and detectable warning truncated domes.
The crossing of Walton Creek Road (which is currently an uncontrolled intersection with high volumes of traffic) will be improved by installing advanced pedestrian warning beacons and an overhead street light to increase driver awareness of potential pedestrian encounters at the intersection.
The project involves a full lane closure and mandatory detour of Chinook Lane for the entire duration of the project. Vehicles will only be able to travel one-way on Chinook Lane at the Walton Creek Road intersection. Motorists that usually access Walton Creek Road using Chinook Lane will have to divert to Whistler Road in order to turn onto Walton Creek Road.
Transit stops along Chinook Lane and at Skyview will be temporarily relocated to Whistler Road during the project execution. The project is being constructed during the spring months in an effort to reduce the inconvenience of the detour. The project is expected to run until the end of May.
The project is funded by a grant from the Colorado Department of Transportation Division of Transit and Rail with matching funds from the City of Steamboat Springs. The overall project is expected to cost about $120,000.
