[ARCHIVED] Statewide Fingerprint System Brings Local Changes

FingerPrint NewsFlash

With the New Year, the recently implemented statewide fingerprinting process brings local revisions to the Steamboat Springs Police Department’s ability to provide fingerprinting services as of January 14, 2019.

This past fall, Colorado launched the Colorado Applicant Background Services (CABS) program which significantly changed the process for obtaining civil fingerprints for individuals seeking background checks. During the initial transition, the SSPD was able to petition to continue providing fingerprinting on a temporary basis; but that exemption has ended. The department has been selected as an approved vendor location under the new CABS program; however, final approval is still pending finalization of service jurisdiction between the vendor and state.Fingerprinting - SSP Chart

“While this break in service is only temporary, we apologize for the inconvenience and are hopeful that the vendor setup in Steamboat Springs can be finalized within the next month,” said Commander Jerry Stabile. “Our goal has always been to provide an option for local fingerprinting services to our community and we’ll let citizens know immediately when that approval arrives from the state.”

With the Colorado program, individuals are required to use an approved fingerprinting vendor site to submit their electronic prints to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation for processing. Currently, IdentoGo is up and running in Craig, CO, currently the closest location for Steamboat citizens.

For a list of locations, costs, hours of operation, and other details, contact IdentoGO and/or Colorado Fingerprinting (pending). IdentoGO lists a $10 processing fee per applicant, plus state and FBI fees (if required). All appointments including mobile services (for 30 or more people) must be scheduled in advance. Currently, the closest available IdentoGO sites to Steamboat Springs are located in Craig and Granby.

Colorado joins several other states that are already using third party vendors to offer fingerprinting services for citizens in need of licensing for a variety of professions. The CBI received approximately 200,000 fingerprint-based background check requests for professions such as Realtors®, daycare providers, teachers, and many others last year. Individuals may check the CBI’s website frequently or call the center directly at 844.539.5539 with questions.
