[ARCHIVED] New Year Brings Off-Leash Changes to Blackmer Trail

Blackmer NewsFlash 2

Blackmer NewsFlashAs the City of Steamboat Springs moves into the New Year, Blackmer Trail will also move from being an off-leash area to now requiring leashes at all times.

Starting January 1, 2019, Blackmer Trail will be removed from the off-leash areas across the city available to dog owners.  The change was made during a city council meeting on September 4, 2018.  A replacement area for Blackmer is under consideration and is anticipated to be approved during the first half of 2019.

Currently, there are two off-leash parks and three trial off-leash areas for dog lovers to let their pets roam free. Rita Valentine Park and Spring Creek Park at the Lower Pond are the city’s two primary off-leash dog parks.  In addition, three off-leash trial areas - Butcherknife, Lower Spring Creek near the high school and Whistler Park - also provide ample room for pets to go off-leash.

All off leash areas are clearly signed at entry/exit points with a map outlining details. Off leash hours in both dog parks and the off leash areas run from one hour after sunrise to one hour before sunset. Please keep your dog on a leash until well within the off leash areas.

When using these areas, dog waste removal and disposal is required by law. Individuals can report animal complaints to Police Dispatch at 970.879.1144. Additional information and maps highlighting the Dog Parks and Off Leash Trial Areas can be found at
