The Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority (SSRA) is proud to announce the opening of the Ski Time Square Roundabout Project at the intersection of Ski Time Square Drive and Mt. Werner Circle later this afternoon.
Duckels Construction, the SSRA’s general contractor, will remove the temporary detour signage and traffic control devices this afternoon and traffic will begin flowing through the new intersection by the end of day, November 2. As a result, Steamboat Springs Transit will resume city bus service to the Burgess Creek Road and Ski Time Square Drive stops on Saturday, which was temporarily discontinued during construction.
“This is an enormous step forward for mobility in this highly traveled area,” said City Engineer Ben Beall. “As with other major projects like this, collaboration is key and this project wouldn’t have moved forward as efficiently without everyone’s support and cooperation.”
The project looked to enhance the intersection at Mt. Werner Circle and Ski Time Square Drive with a roundabout, improving multi-modal flow and connectivity in this vital and high-traffic area of the mountain village.
The Roundabout is similar to the ones previously constructed at Central Park Drive and Après Ski Way/Mt. Werner Circle. Under the direction of Duckels Construction, the project started on July 9 with major infrastructure efforts, followed by two distinct phases of the project, which focused on the north and south sides of the intersection. To commemorate the completion of this improvement, the SSRA and the City of Steamboat Springs will host an on-site ribbon cutting celebration on Wednesday, November 7 at 3:30pm.
“This project was designed to improve the visitor experience and increase safety and accessibility in the Ski Time Square area,” said Public Works Engineer Danny Paul. “I know that the entire project team is proud to contribute to the SSRA’s vision for the Mountain Urban Renewal Area and hope that these improvements are well received by guests and locals alike.”
Ralph Walton, SSRA Project Manager, recognized the Steamboat Grand, the Sheraton Steamboat, the Steamboat Ski & Resort Corporation and the many commercial business and residential property owners who adapted to the construction activities. “Easements provided by these properties were essential and the cooperation and understanding from the neighboring businesses helped make everything work with tolerable disruptions.”
The project was overseen by Danny Paul (Public Works Staff Engineer) Garrett Hanson (TRC Solutions) and Ralph Walton (SSRA Project Manager) working with a dedicated team from Duckels led by Kelly Fender (Project Superintendent) to bring the project in on time and on budget ahead of the winter season.
