Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) was asked for assistance by West Routt Fire Protection District for a critical patient with need for possible RSI. RSI (Rapid Sequence Intubation) is a paramedic level skill (SSFR is one of the few ambulance agencies in the state with this capability) that involves the chemical paralysis of a patient and subsequent insertion of a breathing tube to maintain their airway. Indications for this procedure includes combative head injured patients, stroke patients, patients in a continuous seizure or any patient where they have the potential for airway compromise (death by asphyxiation) if a breathing tube is not inserted.
West Routt Fire Protection District was able to load their patient in the ambulance and rendezvoused with SSFR around the Milner area. The patient had been involved in a highway speed head on collision. It was determined that the potential for airway compromise was high and a RSI was performed on the patient. The patient was transported to UC Health at YVMC in critical condition.
All other information is considered confidential and will not be released. Should you have any questions about RSI or the capabilities of SSFR please contact Deputy Chief Cerasoli at (970)879-7170.
