[ARCHIVED] Arnold Barn Move Delayed By Weather

Arnold Barn Move NewsFlash

With inclement weather forecasted next week, the historic Arnold Barn will wait a week longer to move to its new location at the intersection of Mt. Werner Road and Mt. Werner Circle. After 90 years in its current location, the relocation is now scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, October 15 & 16. During the move, various traffic detours and vehicle holds will be implemented.

The barn will be placed on a flat-bed truck on Monday, Oct. 15, and driven to the northwest corner of the Meadows Parking Lot to position it for the second leg of the three-part journey. This portion of the move is anticipated to take several hours.  In addition that day, city crews will remove several directional signs and other obstacles on Mt. Werner Road that would impact the barn’s travel.

Between 8AM to 9AM on Tuesday, Community Service Officers (CSO) and city crews will put the finishing touches on the detours and reroutes, which will go into effect between 8:30am and 9am.  The barn is expected to start its move around 9am and the journey will take around an hour to hour and half on this portion of the road.

While the barn is traveling on the uphill side of Mt. Werner Drive, traffic headed to the ski mountain will share the north side lanes with downhill traffic; then continuing around Mt. Werner Circle as part of current traffic pattern. Uphill traffic will not be permitted to turn left toward the Steamboat Grand during this time.

Vehicles leaving the ski area and Ski Time Square will travel down the south portion of Mt. Werner Circle; then be detoured onto Eaglesridge Drive to Walton Creek Road. Travelers should keep in mind that Village Drive is closed due to the installation of a new culvert.

Once the barn makes the turn from Mt. Werner Road to the north side of Mt. Werner Circle, a complete traffic hold will occur on that portion of the road up to Burgess Creek Road so the barn can be backed into the site location.  During the 20 to 30 minute hold, all traffic will use the south portion of Mt. Werner Circle and vehicles from Burgess Creek will be directed through the roundabout under construction.

The entire process is anticipated to take around two hours and the move is dependent upon weather. As has already been the case, another storm or wet conditions could potentially postpone the project again.

For those wishing to watch the transition to its new location, it is suggested to park in the Meadows Lot and view the process from the sidewalk/bike path on the south side of Mt. Werner Drive. Spectators may also use the outer portion of Mt. Werner Circle across from the new site. Please stay off the road at all times.

This project is made possible by strong community partnerships and grassroots efforts and is funded by the Steamboat Springs Redevelopment Authority and generous contributions from community members.
