Steamboat Springs has iconic views and visual aspects that touch the heart of locals for generations and visitors from around the globe. Now these same elements are being incorporated into a new Steamboat Springs Police badge and patch to be worn by police officers.
“We were looking for something that captures the essence of the community and reflects our dedication to service and public trust,” said Police Chief Cory Christensen. “I believe the new badge and patch does just that and demonstrates the unity that each and every one of us has to our profession, our department and our community. Even more satisfying, is that every member of the department played a key role in this initiative.”
Around the world, the uniform badge is the most visible and recognizable symbol of policing, seen by many as a sign of law enforcement authority. The classic shield shape is customized to be as unique as the community the department serves and protects. The view of Mt. Werner coupled with the historic downtown area is front and center on the badge. The use of the snowflake embodies our collective strength and the mountain pride of our winter heritage, while mirroring the city’s signature snowflake spur symbol. Each badge will reflect the officer’s rank and assigned number.
Complementing the uniform badge, the shoulder patch integrates other key features of the community that officers have chosen to serve. The natural environment inspires us on a daily basis and the new patch honors the four seasons and the community’s legacy of service. The beautiful skies that appear in the morning with the promise of a new day to the evening setting sun as the day slows down highlights the top of the design. The mountains are center and the snowcapped peaks exemplify winter sports, our zest of winter and summer activities and our appreciativeness of the beauty and grandeur of the valley. The signature city spur holds at the forefront our authentic western heritage and the significance that still strongly holds true today. The Yampa River flows freely at the bottom of the patch as the lifeblood of the community and inspires us to nurture our neighbors.
The new insignia will be phased into service over the next few months and coincides with an updated Steamboat Springs Police mission, vision and values. The patches will be the first to accent uniforms and the new badges will be rolled out in the beginning of 2019.
