The City of Steamboat has published the final January 2013 Sales, Use, and Accommodation Tax Report. City of Steamboat Springs’ January sales taxes are 8.53% more than the January 2012 collections, a difference of $150,176. The City budgeted January 2013 sales tax at $1,702,203, placing the actual taxes collected 11% over budget for this month and year-to-date.

Increases were seen across all categories of sales. The largest increase was a 17.25% increase in Sporting Goods. West Steamboat saw an increase of 21.08% over January 2012 and US 40 Corridor saw an increase of 17.27%. These increases correspond with the large amount of snowfall Steamboat Springs received in December of 2012, which was the sixth-highest December on record, according to the Western Regional Climate Center. The sales forecasts by the U.S. Department of Commerce indicate the full 1st Quarter of 2013 should show increased sales.

Accommodation Tax, which is currently used to fund Haymaker debt payments, saw an increase of 2.24% compared to the same time period in 2012.

The Local Marketing District Air Service Sales Tax, with a rate of .25%, saw an increase of 35.03% over January 2012. This tax began January 1, 2012 and is held separately from the City of Steamboat Springs sales tax.

Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax audits completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. January 2013 showed an increase of $20,444 over January 2012. According to Yampa Valley Data Partners, there are increasing signs of encouragement in the construction industry.
