STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue (SSFR) was dispatched to 1195 Bangtail W
ay for the report of a smell of smoke coming from the Lodge where The Brick Restaurant is located. Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue responded with 10 on-duty personnel staffing one Engine, one ambulance, one Ladder truck. Five off duty personnel arrived in three staff vehicles and one ambulance. Ambulance 6-3 was the first arriving Fire Department Apparatus on scene and reported smoke coming from the fourth floor of the building. The first arriving crew immediately requested that the type of call be changed to a structure fire. Shortly after the change in call type a mutual aid request was sent to West Routt Fire Protection District (WRFPD) who responded with one Ladder Truck and an ambulance and Oak Creek Fire Protection District (OCFPD) who responded with one Fire Engine. WRFPD personnel provided assistance on scene while OCFPD covered Steamboat Springs and the surrounding district with a Steamboat Ambulance staffed by two additional off-duty personnel.
Upon arrival of the SSFR Ladder 6-2 the aerial was extended to the fourth floor and all visible flames were knocked down while interior firefighting personnel set up to make fire attack from the inside of the building. SSFR Engine 6-2 attached a 3” fire hose to the “Stand-pipe” of the building. The stand-pipe connection allowed personnel to deploy a high-rise pack (hose and tool bundle pre packaged for a high rise fire) from the third floor and make access to the roof and fire area. After initial knockdown it was determined that area on fire was an elevated exterior utility area. Personnel using hand tools and hoselines pulled drywall and roofing material in the area to ensure that the fire had not extended in to the structure beyond where it was visible.
The fire caused extensive damage to the utility area and the roof around the fire site. No personnel or people working in the building were injured and the cause of the fire is under investigation by SSFR Fire Marshalls office. SSFR would like to thank WRFPD and OCFPD for providing personnel to safely mitigate this fire and cover the greater Steamboat area. Additional assistance was provided by SSPD, Routt County Communications, Yampa Valley Electric Association, and Atmos Energy.
