The City of Steamboat Springs has extended the period it is accepting proposals for public art to be placed on city-owned (public) property through Friday, September 21, 2018.
“Steamboat Springs has a strong desire to display works of art that can be appreciated by the community,” expressed Winnie DelliQuadri, assistant to the city manager. “Through this process, we’re able to grow the collection of pieces; but more importantly, can ensure that all works will be maintained for generations to come.”
Proposals are being accepted through Friday, September 21, 2018. Applicants must submit an application (PDF) and associated additional information including photographs, site plans, maintenance requirements, and budget, etc. via email or drop off at City Hall, 137 10th Street in Steamboat Springs. The city’s Public Art Policy (PDF) which provides guidance on this process, as well as the Public Art Donation Application (PDF) can be found on the website.
Public art is defined in its broadest sense as any original creation of visual art that is acquired with public monies or a combination of public/private funding; that is donated or loaned to the city’s Public Art Collection; or that is a privately sponsored artwork that is proposed to be located on publicly owned land.
For this purpose, works of public art may include but are not limited to sculpture, painting, mural, graphic arts, mosaics, photography (film and video), crafts, mixed media, fountains, and earth works and environment installations. It may be temporary or permanent, located inside or outside of a public building, or located outside on public land.
Appropriate city departments will be consulted to evaluate the proposal, and a curatorial group will make recommendations to Parks & Recreation Commission and/or City Council for final approval.
Don’t plan on submitting a proposal, but interested in preserving the city’s public art? The Steamboat Springs Public Art Maintenance Endowment Fund, housed at the Yampa Valley Community Foundation, serves as a way to provide a permanent endowment to maintain and restore public art located in and around the City of Steamboat Springs.
